As I mentioned in one of my posts, I would imagine it has a lot to do with branding and the look of the packaging. Will it impact sales? It's possible, but that may be offset by the fact that the copies sold will continue to bring in a higher profit per unit. Someone, somewhere, has the stats on how truly well a "Player's Choice" label works in moving units. I doubt a decision like this is made on an arrogant whim by an exec...they probably have the numbers to back it up.
But it also took fiveyears before the GBA came out with a PC line and they rolled out a whole bunch of top selling titles to help prop up software sales near the end of that system, so that may yet happen with the DS and Wii. If so, we won't be seeing it on the DS for another couple of years (at least) and not on the Wii for another 3-4 years.
