Companies generally want to encourage consumers to move on to their next product, not support the old one and keep it viable. I understand you're saying that this is a different market than what the PS3 is going for, but I think that Sony would want tot ry and push as many consumers as possible towards the PS3, as opposed to their older model.
I think it comes down to return on investment. Any effort/money that Sony puts into supporting an older console won't give them as high a return as money put into their new console (which has 4-5 before it's old hat).
