If I am not mistaken, the longer life sales has been historically proven only applicable / available as an option for the market leader (#1) console. It happened to NES and SNES, and it also happened to PS and PS2.
Only market loser (#2 or #3) tried to shorten the life of their current generation, in the hope that in the next generation (which they started), they can hope to win the race by starting early.
It happened to Sega (re Dreamcast), it happened to Microsoft (re X360). Not sure whether it also happen to Sony (re PS1 as new player), or Sega.
