Historically, PSP vs DS, which one is more supported by third party in their first year ? In their second year ? Does third party support really determine who win this portable war ? I think the answer to the questions will cover the portable third party question.
Historically, which one is more supported by third party, Sega (Genesis, Saturn) or Nintendo (NES, SNES) ?
If you only compare N64 vs PS1, or GC vs PS2 (vs DC), yes, it is true that PS1 (& PS2) has the most third party, and win the war.
I think this generation (Wii vs X360 vs PS3) will give us the definitive answer for the difficult question : Is excellent Third party support really necessary to win the console war ? Or is excellent first party support sufficient, as long as you have momentun, fad, and some (but far from majority / excellent) third party support ?
Sorry to answer your question with more question, since I don't really follow sales during the NES and SNES era. I only started following sales during GCN era.
