I never said they would have to buy Mario Party 8 and Mario Party DS at the same time. They could have bought Mario Party 8 awhile ago or bought any of the other Mario Party games before and enjoyed them. They then see Mario Party DS and figure that they will draw the same enjoyment from it and proceed to buy it. It is the same thing with Animal Crossings, both myself and several people I know bought the version for the DS solely because we enjoyed Animal Crossings on the GameCube.
If their child already has the top 3 games you mentioned (which would seem likely) and they have a boy, I doubt Hannah Montana would be the next logical choice. Also, asking a clerk to remember details of certain purchases is iffy, I have asked many clerks if a certain game is in stock or if they remember when a game was last at the store, and they could not remember.
Also, I have seen no instance at my local Gamestop, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and Circuit City in which Hannah Montana was recommended to parents. I have seen clerks mention that if a child liked Mario Party 8 on the Wii that they would like it on the DS, since it is portable and they can play with their friends or siblings on the road.
Also, can you supply post in which your sampling from your local stores proved correct?
Mario Party 8 for the Wii has already sold 3 million +, I think that proves (along with nearly every Mario Party game selling 1.5 million +) the staying power of a strong casual brand. Plus, as I said before, A party game + DS + holiday season, this is is going to sell quite well in the short and long term.
