In the article, GameDaily asked that of NPD but they weren't prepared to reveal it. Moreover, the PS3 only sold 121,000 units in October when only the 80GB was on sale. That's less than 10% of what sold in the last quarter so it's unlikely to be *that* significant in the grand scheme of things.
It was almost universally believed that the 40GB would be more popular beforehand, I think the article at least gives pause for thought before jumping to that conclusion. Even if it's more or less equal when discounting October it tell you something.
