SNES was behind Genesis for years and it ultimately took the lead. There's probably other less notable examples as well. "Quite the contrary" to me would be to say the opposite of your previous sentence.
Anyways I was just confused about your wording. And I want to point out that consoles can come from behind to take the lead, that it is possible, it's happened.
