When you are only talking about US market, then your statement is true : SNES did ultimately took the lead from Genesis.
However, IF you look at the Worldwide figure, SNES was always in the lead, while Genesis was always second. At least that is what I get from others who follow game sales since NES/SNES era. I personally only started following console games since GBA launch (I was previously PC game oriented games, and I only play SNES sporadically, like Street Fighter II, but didn't follow its sales).
