In my whole 20 years of PC gaming (since 1987, XT Turbo 10 MHz), there was only 2 occasion in which I have to do significant upgrade of my PC because the current PC can not play a game I wanted to play. That 2 game is FFXI (CPU + Graphic Card) and Neverwinter Night 2 (only graphic card, not total computer).
On average, I do total upgrade of my PC every 4 years (Motherboard + Memory + HD). I buy Monitor every 6 years or so, and my current PC was used by me since 2002.
PC gaming is a quite expensive, but I am staying one generation behind the "cutting edge", so my investment is not too much (cutting edge processor is at least 2 - 3 times more expensive than the older ones).
