@deftangel, I can see where Pachter is coming from, but I think Nintendo is more diverting shipments and holding back shipments and generally just manipulating the hardware available based upon the software launches they are having. For example, they got more hardware out to Japan for the Brawl launch and did the same for the U.S. Brawl launch. Nintendo knows software pushes hardware and will make hardware more available for their important software launches. No matter where Nintendo is shipping and selling Wii units, they are still making a profit, but software is probably dictating more so where hardware is shipped over the value of various currencies.
