First of all, I do agree with you that Wii Play should be handled separately (or, at least, they should mention how much of the 50 million Wii Play was).
But I might have an answer to that question:

Where MS claims a much higher ratio than the Wii so should be higher in overall sales, and at least not almost half. One or both companies are obviously spinning the figures as always. (I know the measure is the first 18months which contributes to part of the discrepancy)"
I don't know if I got you wrong here, but I think you are referring to the high attach-rate MS is claiming which wouldn't make sense if Nintendo's claims are true. But I think it actually is possible Nintendo sold that much software and at the same time MS can have a higher attach-rate, simply because Nintendo sold an awful lot more hardware than MS, thus the attach-rate is not as high even though they sold more software.
