For me the Wii will never reach PS2 numbers because of the competition. This was not a major factor for the PS2 but it is for the Wii. Also it rather depends on the competition and I do not think any of them have given up yet.
The recession is a funny beast, you could see HD decline but you could also see it increase as people invest in home entertainment. I am inclined to think it will track at a similar rate as it is at the moment.
Cost reduction; Yes of course Microsoft will continue to reduce costs on production but I also seem them adding value in the top end models. This would erode some of the PS3 benefits and I think would be a smart move. Also I suspect all three to be working on new shapes colours and alike.
