Honestly I don't think it's serving as a backlash beyond a couple little snipes PS3 and 360 fanboys send at the Wii.
From what I hear from the general public, the impression of the Wii continues to be very positive and the lack of supply still seems to build on the hype for the system. Everyone still seems to want one and Word of Mouth advertising still continues to spread, increasing demand.
As far as this being unprecedented, YES it is. The PS2 and the 360 both had supply problems, but neither lasted for this long, by the time the summer after launch came along, sales slowed as demand was finally satisfied, and then it settled into the typical buying patterns for consoles, high in 3rd, 4th quarter, then slows from 1st to 2nd quarter.
To continue to sell out completely 9-10 months after launch has never happened before, and part of the problem was Nintendo failing to anticipate just how popular the Wii would be, they are working to correct it but so far I don't think their production is high enough to satisfy demand this year.
I expect the Wii to be the hot item this Christmas season, AKA the "Tickle Me Elmo" of Christmas 07.
