If anyone is interested... PS3s version 2.3 system software has literally just been made available for download.
I just finished downloading it and it says it is the new store. It doesn't list anything else in the update. I will be trying out the new store in a minute.
I'm still waiting for in game XMB. I guess the issue is memory.
Didn't think this required article, but think it will interest people. Pachter & other analysts talk about whether MS will make a 360 price cut soon or this year, and how it involves Sony. From reputable gameindustrybiz with quotes, here.
Just a note on the Feb Future. I would expect higher sales coming in Feb because there have been a number of media sites, blogs, webcasts, and articles that have stated that the console war is over and it's now safe to go out and buy into Blu-Ray.
The PS3 is still the cheapest BD player on the market so I would expect the bulk of the people who have been waiting for the end to buy in to go with a PS3.
Well there are a few at the moment but the sky's the limit. One HD-DVD was released allows the viewer to purchase items online whilst watching the film. Another allows users to open up a chat window and talk to other people watching it. With the storage, the latest trailers and (sigh) adverts can be downloaded and played before the feature. One demo at CES even had a game with online multiplayer on a Blu-Ray disc.
Like DVD, the innovation will come once the studios are competing with each other in who can build the most advanced stuff.
Thanks for the mention of BD Live, I've never heard of it (after looking into it, I'm not convinced that consumers will care much). What "advanced Blu-Ray features" would use wireless?
If I want a BD player right now (not a year out like I mentioned) then I can have a stand alone with no option to archive my music or divx or family movies and have wireless firmware updates OR I can have a PS3 for near the same price.
As I said...in a years time this might be moot as more stand alone players add this functionality (DVR too) but for right now the PS3 is the best BD solution at near the lowest cost to boot.
Built in wireless and large amount of storage space for BD Live. It will be mandatory to support profile 2.0 but no such players are out yet and they will be more expensive than players currently on the market now. BD Live requires 1GB storage.
A PS3 needs only a software update as it has the hardware to do BD Live already in place.
The wireless connection is for advanced Blu-Ray features, something the format needs to push hard at if it wants to gain any traction on DVD.
