Do you have anything to support this? Guitar Hero 1 and 2 were a year apart on the PS2 and I can't find sales data that shows what you're claiming. Besides, that was for a year difference in the release dates...not 6 months.
I can't see people running out to buy another full price game so quickly just for more songs, especially when GH3 promises dozens of songs to play.
New GH games don't cannibalize the sales of old games. They enhance them. People coming into the franchise for the first time will want more songs, and the easiest way to get them is to buy an older game.
Gamestop has GH2 (game only) listed to be coming out the same day as GH3. The fact that people can come back a week later and pick up a whole new batch of songs without buying a new guitar as well will be huge. It happened for Guitar Hero 1, there's no reason to believe it won't happen for Guitar Hero 2.
Keep in mind that Guitar Hero 3 is coming out this fall and that should cannibalize much of GH2's sales.
Though I'd estimate that its current sales are around 1.15 million right now. If it holds strong through the summer, it could come in slightly higher than its price.
This stock could be undervalued as the fact that the game has already sold somewhere around 1 million and has continued to sell strong and steadily in the U.S. and other areas. The lifetime sells currently predicted for this game is easily within in reach and even possibly passable.
I love the idea of Guitar Hero as a new Karaoke! You spend so much time trying to get 100% on a favorite song (for me it's been Monkey Wrench on Hard) and when it happens, you really can't do anything with it..
Some of my friends and I get together and do co-op and we have a blast with some of the more off the wall songs.. This is just a great game, and anyone that's played it and has an inkling of rhythm has gone and bought the game shortly thereafter.
As far as the value on this, I see sales increasing as more people play it. I'm not a huge fan of Sony, so I didn't have a PS2, which means that I had seen GH previously, but never played it. I wanted to, but didn't want to spend the money for a PS2 just for that game. With having a 360, I NEEDED this game. Finally it was coming to a system that I had with loads of songs and DLC. I can't wait to see what comes next from Harmonix, as I'd love to have a drum set to be able to play as well...
Gaara, why did you delete the additions of the NPD sales numbers? I think those are good additions to the wiki as long as they are publicly available with citable sources.
I approved your change because I think the official site is good, but I'm adding the past sales numbers back in.
I think it is a good idea to start including a link to the official site of the game in the summary. I want this to be a more open discussion on whether we should include a link to the official site as a sort of standard, so I won't approve my own submission to see what others think about this idea.
I wonder if this was done legally. They'd have to pay for the right to use the songs in this fashion (karaoke businesses have to license the songs). Even if game maker doesn't mind, the music companies might.
Didn't Pachter expect 400K units for this in April? I guess if he also meant March sales then he was under by about 25%. If he meant just April, than he was over by 100%.
