"Some because Nomura is designing it. " So?
"Some because it's more mysterious, less has been revealed. " Like what, FF14?
"Some because it looks more mature/dark than XIII." Looks like FF8 made out with FFX to me *yawn*
"Some because they like the characters, story, and gameplay differences compared to what is generally seen in a FF title. " I have yet to see any solid gameplay information, but maybe then I'm just not looking hard enough.
"Many see it as a more ambitious title than FF XIII." Please elaborate. This is a JRPG that has seen better games and higher sales many moons ago.
@apujanata, Some because Nomura is designing it. Some because it's more mysterious, less has been revealed. Some because it looks more mature/dark than XIII. Some because they like the characters, story, and gameplay differences compared to what is generally seen in a FF title. Many see it as a more ambitious title than FF XIII.
@Joe80, "with most dedicated fans more excited about it than 13"
Even though I played FF1-4, VII-X-2, XII, I didn't really follow up on XIII, since I became tired with the FF Franchise starting with XII. Can you elaborate why fans are more excited about the Versus compared to 13 ?
@zeromous, It is a mainstream FF product, we just haven't heard a lot about it yet since its release is farther away.
FF XIII is on 360 and PS3. There are people who own both systems or will decide to buy a PS3, FF Versus XIII will get all its sales on PS3 instead of 50/50 or 60/40 on PS3 & 360.
Why would someone buy FF Versus after buying FF XIII for 360? Its a spiritual sequel to the previous game they bought, its a new AAA game, they like FF games, they've been introduced to FF through FF XIII. Any of those.
Of course a single platform will not sell more than a multiplatform if you combine both consoles sales. But a single platform game that comes out on a future larger userbase could sell more than the title before it that was available on 2 consoles. There's only one place to buy it, not two.
It's not faulty logic at all. A game available on 360 & PS3 will see many sales go to the 360 version. A game only on PS3 will not have any people get it for another console. Therefore, FF Versus can sell more on PS3 than FF XIII does on PS3.
85+ million FF games have sold, 27 million SF games have sold. It is not ancient history. Look at the recent figures for games in each series. Both have continually had sequels.
Furthermore, SF's popularity was highest farther back than FF's was. (1992 versus 1997). Sales data argues against your belief that SF is more popular. I don't know why you bring up cross platform appeal when we're arguing about an exclusive to one console. You originally were talking about SF being "much bigger than FF in terms of base".
I find it unbelievable that you think this game may never be completed as it's a major title with a huge budget, directed by Tetsuya Nomura, and part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII compilation. Why would it be a quiet release when it is a major game from SE, with most dedicated fans more excited about it than 13. If it stays exclusive, it will also get a lot of press as well.
Blockbuster title that has sold less? What are you referring to?
As I said before I can see it going under 5 million or over. I have no position in this game, but I can't sit by and have someone talk about it the way you are when I highly disagree with what you're saying.
Well, you are right about one thing... It's not a fighting game (I think I mistook this game for something else).
This doesn't change my analysis however. I do not believe a non mainstream FF product has legs to sell more than 5 million anymore, whether it is multiplatform or not. Single platform is actually to the detriment of this title. Suppose FFXIII only sells 5 million on PS3 because it is not multiplatform, how is that a basis for Versus to sell 5 million as single platform? I believe not only will it sell less, but why would someone buy VS for their PS3 after buying FFXIII on Xbox? This is the basis for the idea that a single platform title will sell more than a multiplatform title. Its faulty logic.
I did compare to Street Fighter to make my point because I was under the impression Versus was the FF fighting title, but if you want to use ancient history to make your point that is fine. :) I accept your point from that perspective. But we're talking about 2010 here. I still feel Street Fighter still has more cross platform appeal than the Final Fantasy series in the last decade.
To clarify on my other statement about seeing the light of day, I doubt if this game will ever be completed. If it is completed, it will be a quiet release. That said, there is just no reason to expect this title to perform like a blockbuster title that has sold less.
The only way this sells 5 million is if Sony has a huge install base turnaround. As it stands a year or two from now, 1 in 6 or 7 PS3 owners will have to buy this game for the stock to achieve what is currently predicted for VS.
@Joe80, I think he meant that since FFXIII are mutliplatform, there is a high chance that there is also an FF Versus 13, X360 version. Having 2 version, even if the X360 version is 6 months after PS3 version, meant lowered sales potential of PS3 version.
I highly doubt that it can go more than 5 Million, but the difference is different than zeromous's, which is why I have small short of this stock ATM.
AAA fighting games like Street Fighter (which is arguably much bigger than FF in terms of base) won't even approach 5 million copies.
This is fanboyism plain and simple. Which of course, makes this a great opportunity to short. Full disclosure, I've held a small position and I'm getting in on this more for sure, especially with the delays.
This title may never even see the light of day as an exclusive!
