@afsplat, Is this a problem with game crazy itself, or is it a beginning of trend in gaming industry ? Circuit city closed recently, IIRC. Is Game Crazy also selling used game ?
Joystiq has learned that retailer Game Crazy plans to close 200 of its approximately 680 locations at the end of October. Sources working at Game Crazy stores attached to Hollywood Video locations have told us that the movie rental chain will remain open after their stores' closures.
The company behind the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, Square Enix, is rumored to be trimming down its workforce. Apparently, somewhere between 200 and 300 Square Enix Japan employees will lose their jobs.
If true, this could simply be a corporate reorganization after the acquisition of Eidos Interactive, which is schedule to be renamed Square Enix Europe. Taito is also under the Square Enix Japan umbrellas, so these rumored lay-offs could also be Taito-related.
As holiday shopping season gets started (yes, folks, now that "back to school" is over, it's really all about Christmas), Sony is already celebrating. Its $100 price cut on the PlayStation 3 (and the flood of advertising that was launched along with it) has sent sales soaring, with unit sales up 300 percent in the three weeks prior to September 1. Revenue over that time is up 140 percent, not as much as unit sales due to the lower prices, but still an impressive leap.
American sales tracker NPD has told MCV that it wants to introduce the globe’s first digital download chart. Leading publishers & trade body ELSPA last month told MCV that the time was right to introduce digital charts in the UK, through GfK-ChartTrack. Now NPD wants to offer charts for PC, console & even mobile across the Atlantic. The NPD Group won’t yet confirm how quickly the charts will be created – but ruled out a merged retail and digital chart.
The TOKYO GAME SHOW 2009 will be using "green power" - just as it did last year
- to contribute to the conservation of the global environment. All 280,000 kWh
of the power consumed at the common areas of the show will be generated by a
biomass power station.
Games and Preservation - the next order word...
Bethesda Softworks has filed suit against Interplay, the company it purchased rights to the Fallout franchise from in 2007, citing trademark infringement and attempting to terminate its right to make a Fallout-themed MMO.
My big gains seem to be coming from heavily shorting the games that I don't think are going to make the top 10. As an investment strategy, it's working out well.
Although maybe it's highlighting a flaw in the intial IPO prices offerred for some of these titles. I mean, is Ninja Gaiden Sigma on PS3 really going to hit the top 10 when it's releasing in the same month as ODST, Guitar Hero and Beatles:RB?
