Well, this game is about to come out in America...hopefully people will realize how over-priced it is once some numbers come out for there...
It's now selling less than 2000 units per week in Japan and looks like it'll end up just under 300,000. So right now the stock price is saying that 1.7 million copies will be sold elsewhere (or 85%).
Japanese sales of the 4 previous Pokemon console games (sold worldwide so Stadium 3 doesn't count) accounted for 23%, 45%, 28% and 31% of sales. So taking that average (32%) and taking Japanese sales would predict a lifetime of about 900k. This is the worst selling Pokemon console battling game ever for Japan and should be closer to 1 million (previous lowest selling game was XD which sold 350,000 in Japan and 1.14 million overall).
It's now at spot 71 on the Japanese charts, selling 3700 a week and has so far moved 227,000 units.
This is VERY disappointing. The 3 Stadium games sold well (905k, 1.14 mil, 1.37 mil) and the GC ones did as well (710k, 350k). This is at a time when Diamond/Pearl are still selling millions...gamers do not want this game. I would bet that the lack of any engaging single-player mode and the availability of wi-fi play for the DS versions has rendered this game redundant.
Sales of console fighting Pokemon games aren't consistent in terms of relation to Japanese sales. However this one is selling slower than XD did and that one ended up at just over 1.1 million in sales. This stock shouldn't be above 150 DKP, and that's being optimistic about the reception in America.
When you think about it, think how many parents will buy it for their kids. It's what the whole franchise bases its game after, the kids. I remember getting stadium 1 and loving it. I loved being able to see the monsters I trained on the screen in 3d. Word around town is that this game is supposed to be completely different then the recent "stadium-esque" games for th GC. I think It will do well.
Interesting point, the Japanese sales have been quite disappointing compared with earlier games. I wonder if it's to do with the single player features of Battle Revolution...or really, the lack thereof (even compared to earlier console efforts). Having no redeeming value on its own might leave people to choose to fight using Diamond/Pearl and ignore the prettier graphics.
Considering that, this title is likely very overpriced. I think it could go to below 200DKP easily, if not much further. This stock could be overpriced by over 100 DKP.
Pokemon Stadium 2 and Pokemon Colleseum both shipped 2.5 million WW.
However, those games sold 925K and 700K in Japan alone. Battle Revolution is under 275K, and looking at under 400K lifetime in Japan.
I'm doubtful that NA and EU will make up the difference. To be fair, Colleseum sold better than Stadium 2 outside of Japan. But I'm highly doubtful Battle Revolution will sell more again.
jayen- a little of column A, a little of column B. :P
kingpita- vgchartz has Japanese sales around a quarter million. Looking at console-based Pokemon games, Japan is generally not as strong as the Americas in sales (exception being Stadium 2). Interpret as you will, that's all the info I've got laying around.
I would like to see the sales data from Japan. It's been out there for a while, and they had an installed base of Pokemon Diamond/Pearl users. We also have to assume that Wii shortages could affect demand for the game. The Wii is aimed at a general consumer now, and we can no longer assume that every Wii purchase is by someone who owns a Nintendo DS. So sales of the game could be slow at first, and then pickup.
I'm kinda on the fence with this one. The first Pokemon Stadium did great, about 5.5 million. The second and the GameCube version did right around 2.5. XD, though, only did about 1.1. I suppose that's just because it wasn't as much a Stadium-style game.
Basically, any hope that this moves upward is really hope on the WiFi and DS connectivity carrying the game. At least, in my opinion.
