Everyone knows how popular StarCraft II is and it seems these numbers will convince you all the more.
In one month alone, Blizzard Entertainment has reportedly sold over 3 million copies of the latest real-time strategy game taking the world by storm.
Analysts expect StarCraft II to hit 7 million copies this year. And from the first month sales alone, it wouldn't be surprising if the game goes over that forecast.
And if all goes well, Hellerman will be releasing this curious iPhone app called the StarCraft II Gameboard.
Of course, this doesn't really mean you can play the full StarCraft II game on your iPhone.
Rather, the StarCraft II Gameboard is an app that allows StarCraft II addicts to use the iPhone as a controller of sorts.
In case Blizzard doesn't end up shutting down the said app, the StarCraft II Gameboard should be out by next month.
Well, it's been a long wait, but StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (SC2) is finally here! Its release has been surrounded with one controversy after another as Blizzard simultaneously excited and disappointed its fans with the revealed features over the StarCraft II beta.
Starcraft II sold 721,000 units in the United States in July - compared to 692,000 units for the second placed game (NCAA Football 11). Blizzard claims that it is already the best selling PC game of the year.
There are a total of 600,000,000 won (app. 500,000 USD) in prizes planned for the year 2010, which is the most amount of money in the history of e-sports. The winner of the monthly tournament will be given 100,000,000 won (app. 85,500 USD), and runner up and semifinalists will be given 30,000,000 won (app. 25,000 USD) and 10,000,000 won (app. 8,500 USD) respectively. The players will be divided into upper and lower league depending on their performance in the 2010 league for the 2011 league.
IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced that StarCraft® II: Wings of Liberty™ achieved a day-one sales milestone of more than 1 million copies sold worldwide, making it the best-selling PC game of 2010 within its first 24 hours of availability.* The game went on to sell a total of more than 1.5 million copies in its first 48 hours, setting the record for fastest-selling strategy game of all time.*
Early data is in and it looks like StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty has become the fastest-selling game of 2010 to date and one of the fastest-selling PC games of all time. VGChartz estimates that around 1.8 million units of the game were sold on day 1 across the Americas and Europe including both physical retail sales and Battle.net download sales. The number of players in Korea playing the game on day 1 could be as high at 3-4 million but only Blizzard will know for sure.
Starcraft II is very likely to become one of the best-selling games of all time. Industry sources (via Fudzilla) report that the game is expected to sell some six to seven million copies within its first fiscal year. That would be $171 million in profit and a total of $350 million in sales. By contrast, the original Starcraft has sold some 9.5 million copies.
On the eve of the release of one of the most anticipated video games in history, it should come as no surprise that Blizzard's title has broken 800,000 pre-orders. While Activision Blizzard can no doubt already be envisioning the padding to their bottom line for the fiscal year, gamers can't seem to wait to get their Zerg, Protoss or Terran on when StarCraft 2 lands into their hands come midnight and it certainly shows.
