I would trust a news source over VG Charts anyday of the week. VG Charts is notorious for being grossly off in their calculations, especially for their Console numbers.
It was over a million before the PS3 even launched in Europe, since that time theres been almost 2 million additional PS3 sales worldwide, and Sony has been using this game as their primary game to market and advertise, especially in Europe.
I think you either have a case of a writer misquoting a number (likely) or a spokesperson saying the wrong one. That's about 600,000 higher than the vgcharts number and I doubt they've sold that many in PAL regions to cause such a discrepancy. Though it is a possibility that it's new info. Hopefully a confirmation will come soon, but every other news source I've seen talking about this story has said 1 million.
I believe that Resistance is far undervalued. I was recently reading an article about the Church of England suing Sony over use of the Manchester Cathedral in the game and I found an interesting little tid-bit at the end of the article.
According to Associated Press and Sony spokeswoman Nanako Kato the article found at the link below states the following: "Global sales of "Resistance: Fall of Man" - a Sony original - have totaled more than 2 million units, Kato said."
So does the Church of England actually have a case? The article explores the merits of the CofE claim against Sony for using footage of Manchester Cathederal in Resistance: Fall of Man. Normally the adage is no publicity is bad publicity but in this case I think after having seen how the British media handled it I doubt that holds water.
SCEE have issued a statement in regards to the hissy-fit the Church of England threw on the weekend over Manchester Cathedral's portrayal in Resistance. It's basic argument? A solid one: that Resistance is not real.
Church officials in the UK are up in arms over the inclusion of Manchester Cathedral as a setting for the PS3's FPS, Resistance Fall of Man. They claim that Sony used the nave of the cathedral for the scene of a huge battle without first gaining permission from the church itself. Additionally, they are incensed that a church would be used as a setting for such a violent game.
Your number show current sales already at 1.42 million, SE is predicting 1.62 million a difference of 200,000.
You say it is selling 5k per week in the US ans suspect slightly better in PAL territories so lets say 10K per week total...that would be 40K per month meaning only 5 more months of current sales to reach SE prediction.
With the potential PS3 user base growth that is anticipated in late 2007 by SONY (they are, afterall still shipping 11 million more consoles this fiscal year) and a likely price drop in RFOM as new titles come out...seems to me that another 200,000 in sales is very reachable.
Thus I ask, did you mean to say overvalued? You seemed to be arguing undervaled.
