@Alchemy, While I'm all about ease of finding information, I think this is a bit excessive. The DEC NPD is already listed on the game's main page, and the Japanese data you're referencing is a highly valued article already.
To be honest, I thought this wiki change would be something more updated about the description of the game itself, as it seems like the one up there now is from before the game was released.
Added NPD December numbers and Japanese sales based on user submission. The wikidate says the game came out in November, anybody seen the numbers for that?
Based on the latest info of Mario Party DS Dec 07, this stock seems underpriced.
Current MPDS LTD : Japan : 1.5 Million (up to Jan 6, 2007) US : 385K (Dec) + 190K (estimate of Nov) = 575K Europe : Unknown. I'll use same figure as US = 575K Total LTD (estimate) = 2.6 Million (for the first two months).
note about Europe. I estimate the same # as US since Europe buy a lot of DS H/W (like US), and the casual games, like Brain Training 1 & 2, are doing very, very well there (#2 in UK 2007 list), even better than US (in this regard, it more closely resemble Japan than US).
@apujanata, I'm not really too worried about it. I was just so sure of my MPDS prediction that I let the other ones slide. I wanted to pull off another Rock Band. Oh well. There's always January.
@apujanata, I'm going to be down 700-800k depending on what happens with the rest of the GLS that I'm in. In the end, it wasn't MPDS that crushed me (I averaged it up to about 36, so I only lost about 150k there), it was Xbox 360 (long 140ish), Uncharted (short at 14 WTF happened there?!), and HL2 (PS3) (long 10.25) that ABSOLUTELY crushed me. My sell of COD4 @ 130 was bad, too. But that was just profit taking so I can't complain about that. The 1000 I had left for 75 bucks felt kind of good. But not nearly enough...
It turn out that my prediction of 370K is almost spot on (actual is 38.57). Even though I win some money from this, my loss from overestimating Wii Dec is significantly bigger (4 x) than my profit in this stock. In the end, I think I lose a lot of money today. How about you ?
I never said they would have to buy Mario Party 8 and Mario Party DS at the same time. They could have bought Mario Party 8 awhile ago or bought any of the other Mario Party games before and enjoyed them. They then see Mario Party DS and figure that they will draw the same enjoyment from it and proceed to buy it. It is the same thing with Animal Crossings, both myself and several people I know bought the version for the DS solely because we enjoyed Animal Crossings on the GameCube.
If their child already has the top 3 games you mentioned (which would seem likely) and they have a boy, I doubt Hannah Montana would be the next logical choice. Also, asking a clerk to remember details of certain purchases is iffy, I have asked many clerks if a certain game is in stock or if they remember when a game was last at the store, and they could not remember.
Also, I have seen no instance at my local Gamestop, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and Circuit City in which Hannah Montana was recommended to parents. I have seen clerks mention that if a child liked Mario Party 8 on the Wii that they would like it on the DS, since it is portable and they can play with their friends or siblings on the road.
Also, can you supply post in which your sampling from your local stores proved correct?
Mario Party 8 for the Wii has already sold 3 million +, I think that proves (along with nearly every Mario Party game selling 1.5 million +) the staying power of a strong casual brand. Plus, as I said before, A party game + DS + holiday season, this is is going to sell quite well in the short and long term.
@Gaara42, I concede that Mario games are a safe buy for parents, but Mario Party DS isn't the top Mario game that stores sell to parents, from my digging.
The top 4 games that people mostly push to parents when buying a DS for their children are (from my asking of store clerks at 2 Gamestops, 2 Best Buys, and 1 Target), in no particular order: 1. New Super Mario Bros 2. Mario Kart DS 3. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl 4. Hannah Montana
Mario Party DS is usually mentioned as a game that the clerks throw out there, but most of them time, parents will buy one of the other games before they buy Mario Party DS.
Another thing I asked, was if people were buying Mario Party 8 for Wii and Mario Party DS at the same time, and not a single person at any of those five stores could remember when someone did.
This could just be a regional North Side of Chicago thing, but the trends from my stores have been correct in the past, and I have no reason to believe they're wrong now.
