It confirms Mii characters as racers. It also talks about how boosting has been changed, which could eliminate the annoyance of snaking (powerboosts are controlled differently) and some new items (a POW block for instance). 4 control schemes exist (much like Brawl).
Online multiplayer allows 2 players on one system to go online...so split screen online.
"This spring, nearly a year and a half since the [Wii's] debut, Nintendo will release Mario Kart Wii, the first motion-sensing rendition of the racer. In anticipation of Game Developers Conference this week, the company invited us to Nintendo's Redwood City office to check out the game in action and see just what's in store for Wii owners that are itching to zoom around with Mario and crew."

@sagexsdx, "Information from JP magazine" is actually info from Famitsu. I always try to made sure that the information I gave out is as factual as possible (like waiting for confirmation from yahoo or seeing scan of famitsu page or getting the news from trustworthy source). Thanks for the additional info.
With Smash Bros. at last out (in Japan, at least), Nintendo appears to have penciled in Mario Kart as its next big title. We're assuming that much, considering the unexpected blowout on the game in the latest issue of Famitsu.
Information from JP magazine, confirmed by Yahoo JP, put Mario Kart Wii date as April 10.

@Laoldar, Snaking, eh? Devilishly hard on the DS (but I managed to keep it up for short times), but could be oh-so-much easier on Wii.
The question is, though, how will this affect the long-term sales of the game amongst casual gamers? A non-snaker doesn't stand a chance on the DS online races, will it be the same on Wii?
If so, then this could have a negative effect over time, but not immediately. But, on the other hand, perhaps the innovative approach to the Wii may give the casual gamers a better chance?

This is a fantastic hands-on.

Great hands-on overall :)
