The Call of Duty series is ones of Activisions most prised franchises. Famed for its realistic World War 2 combat, it was no wonder that many eyebrows were raised when Call of Duty 4 went modern.
Hot on the tail of news that Grand Theft Auto 4 just became the bestselling entertainment launch of all time, ever, beating out Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, competing publisher Activision has stepped up and announced that they’ll be launching Call of Duty 5 in fall of this year
"Someone who is more than close enough to know such things has tipped us off over the weekend that, yes Treyarch are indeed hard at work on COD5. And that, yes the series is heading back to WWII. What we didn't know is that the game's set in the under-utilized Pacific theater, something only one major WWII shooter has tried before. If this game can branch out and explore some of the less 'popular' aspects of the conflict, it might not be so bad."
With the newly merged Activision Blizzard's desire to turn the Call of Duty, Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero franchises into "yearly franchises" it looks likely that Infinity Ward will not be developing Call of Duty 5.
@kspraydad, the Fact Sheet also mentions Guitar Hero IV, James Bond, and a new Tony Hawk game.
For those wondering about what VU Games offers beyond Blizzard, there is Sierra Entertainment, Sierra Online, and Vivendi Games Mobile. Sierra has largely languished since VU took it over and hasn't been the PC power house it was in the 90s. Crash Bandicoot and Spyro are some IPs that are included.
According to a fact sheet put out by Activision concerning the merger with Vivendi Games, Activision has revealed that Call of Duty 5 is in the pipeline.
