After playing through the levels on display, I eventually came away with the impression that the game was incorporating elements of various successful franchises and combining them together to create something new. Reminiscent of AC, Crackdown, Web of Shadows and God of War mixed successfully.
Sony has narrowed down the release date for its upcoming PlayStation 3 exclusive inFamous, announcing that the game would launch worldwide in June. The game is Sucker Punch Productions first PlayStation 3 release.
Greg Phillips, producer at SCEA, writes on the official blog that Sucker Punch will be readying a demo for the game, but didn't provide specifics on when that will hit the PlayStation Store.
IGN: "Infamous is awesome. Period. End of statement. I know a lot of times we at IGN get railed on for over-hyping games -- we tell you a game looks great during the preview period but then crap on it when review time comes -- but I'm willing to put my reputation on the line right now and tell you I can't see that happening with this game.
Infamous is a blast, and you're going to need to buy it come spring.
This hands-on has propelled it to the top of that list.
Infamous's producer Nate Fox's demonstration of the game at last month's Games Convention made a refreshing change from some of the more apathetic shows we saw. When we caught up with him later for a more in-depth discussion, his spark was barely dulled by the hangover he confessed to harbouring as he takes us through the development of one of the biggest titles for the PlayStation 3 in 2009.
inFamous is going to be the "next big thing," if Sony has their way. The upcoming 2009 PS3 exclusive from Sucker Punch is going to be getting a massive marketing treatment from SCEA, with a "blockbuster multimillion dollar marketing campaign" in the works. According to a SCEA press release, inFamous will be treated to "aggressive television, print, online and viral advertising campaigns, full promotional support, dedicated point-of-purchase displays and merchandising support".
Sucker Punch, know this: we're going to keep an open mind about inFamous, your upcoming sandbox game for the PS3. If only because you've probably worked really hard on it, it may play real well, and Sly Raccoon was pretty great. But really, a future with rubble, a sandbox game set in a city, a ridiculously capitalised title...it's going to have an uphill struggle to capture people's imaginations, you know?
