"It shouldn't come as much surprise, but if someone owns an Xbox 360, odds are he'll also pick up Halo 3. So far 52 percent of the U.S. installed base owns the game."
I guess the Halo 3 Legendary Edition wasn’t meant to be the big sold out collectible that I once thought it was going to be. Well WalMart is selling it for only $59.82. That is half off what it was originally going for. I am even tempted to pick it up just because my brother has it and I know how nice of a set it is (the helmet was way bigger than I thought it would be). However I find it odd that I remember Amazon having deals on it about a month ago, $99.
This news shows how incredibly front-loaded this title was...if Halo over the next couple months show strong legs, then I'll change my mind but I see no signs of that right now.
I also disagree with the idea that many 360 owners will eventually buy Halo. I think this game will continue to sell a few million more copies, but not at the level you're suggesting.
@Laoldar, are you saying the lifetime stock shouldn't be above 8 million? I was thinking 9 million was low given this news. There will be long-tail sales for the rest of the generation for this title. We are forecasting something like 40 million more Xbox 360s will be sold this generation. Many of these people will be getting Halo 3 eventually.
I wouldn't be so quick to think that the sales will go that much higher. This game has been incredibly frontloaded so far.
They've stated 5 million sold to date (worldwide, unless someone finds another source). Halo 3 sold 3.3 million in September in the US alone. That number fell to only 430,000 in October (which had twice as many weeks of sales).
Using those NPD numbers, it looks like over 75% of Halo 3 sales were made in the US. I don't expect Halo 3's November numbers to be anywhere near October's. I think we'll have a better idea of where this stock should sit once we have the November NPD numbers, but I doubt it should be anywhere above 8 million...I think people are overestimating non-US sales.
Anyways, this should be pretty bullish for the stock. We are projecting another 40 million+ Xbox 360s will be sold. More than 10% of these people will get Halo 3. Then again, the 58 million Xbox 360 forecast has always seemed high to me.
Sorry about the double title, but I tried to edit it and even after I submit the changes after editing it, it will not change (I am sending the support an email about this bug).
"Microsoft have announced that the game [Halo 3] has sold more than five million copies since launch, which for a console that can't have more than 15 million units in the wild is as good an attach rate as anyone at MS HQ could be hoping/praying madly for."
