Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced today that the subscriber base for World of Warcraft®, its award-winning massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), now exceeds 12 million players worldwide. This milestone was reached in the wake of the mainland Chinese launch of World of Warcraft’s second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King®, and also as global anticipation continues to mount for the December 7 release of the game's third expansion, Cataclysm™.
Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced that World of Warcraft®: Cataclysm™, the highly anticipated third expansion for the world's most popular subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game*, will be released starting on December 7, 2010. The expansion will be available on DVD-ROM for Windows® XP/Windows Vista®/Windows® 7 and Macintosh® at a suggested retail price of $39.99 and will also be offered as a digital download from the Blizzard Store.
@Zex_M19, Bad news. MMO-champ is now floating the rumor of a delay in release to early December (ie: Dec 7 or 12). It looks like they might miss the pre-thanksgiving shopping season.
Here is a juicy tidbit for all the WoW fans out there: MMO-Champion is reporting that World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is being targeted for a November 2nd release date. That would mean there could be less than two months to go before the third expansion to the ultra-popular MMO lands.
I would imagine that one would have futures contracts that expire month to month or week to week. The most valuable futures contracts would be those that correlate to what the market thinks the actual release date will be.
It would function just like the futures markets do now I expect. Let's say there were futures contracts for cataclysm to sell 10 million copies in October, 10 million copies in November and 10 million copies in December. If most folks thought that Cataclysm would be released in November, then that month's futures contracts should be the highest priced of the three, with the December contracts being slightly lower and the October contracts being lower still.
