Based on actual sales numbers I think it's pretty safe to say that those who were saying it's overvalued were right. Unless it somehow manages to pick up in sales this game is not going to do anywhere near 17 million sales, probably closer to 10-12 million copies in total.
This stock is overvalued based on actual sales data, time to lose the illusions, this game will not do 17 million, should be at around 1200 DKP
Te first day numbers are in for the latest releases in Japan, such as Ace Combat 6 on Xbox 360 and the Wii duo of Opoona and Super Mario Galaxy. According to Japanese blogger 'sinobi', who regularly updates with early sales figures, Koei's Wii-exclusive RPG 'Opoona', developed by Artepiazza (the team working with Square Enix on the Dragon Quest DS remakes), has only sold around 2,500 copies on its first day, which is 10% of its initial stock.
Anyone who's been paying attention lately should know that Super Mario Galaxy is going to be really good. But how good? After some extended time with the import, we think it just might be good enough to be a perfect "10."
In a rare leak for a Nintendo game, it appears scans of the Super Mario Galaxy strategy guide reveal a second, as yet unknown playable character. The secret character won't be available from the outset of the game and will, in fact, require a fairly high amount of item collecting to unlock.
I don't disagree with what you've said, but one thing has changed since Mario achieved 17 million:
Mario no longer defines video games in the eyes of your average person on the street. Most people have wider view of games, so Mario is no longer the must have.
Its also interesting to note a 3D mario game has never sold 17 million copies, mainly because the barier for entry for some casual gamers is too high.
You might say that the Wii crushes this barier, but there are still many who find the controls too complex compared to two-button/crosskey configurations of old.
Mario has gotten too complex and will never find an audience of 17 million again IMO.
@Laoldar, The three games that everyone talks about are Super Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros, and Mario Kart Wii. Before Metroid Prime came out, there was arguably only one major, first party game out: Twilight Princess. While Mario is the juggernaut character of Nintendo, not all games that feature Mario are major first party releases. I'm defining "major, first party game" as something a consumer would buy a system to play, which I don't think anyone would do for anything that is not an installment of Super Mario Bros, Zelda, Metroid, or Smash Brothers. I don't think the other games that you mentioned would sell systems in and of themselves. That's not to say that they're not a proverbial icing on the cake; they're just not the cake itself.
As for the PS3. I'm talking about games like Gran Tourismo, GTA 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, etc. Brand-name, established, Sony specific games. Just because you rattle off a list of first party Sony games doesn't mean that casual gamers saying that either system doesn't have the games they want isn't true. You and I both know that there are good games to play on both systems, but people who are going to buy a PS3 for GTA, or a Wii for Super Mario Galaxy, aren't going to buy those systems until their games are out.
Really? Not as many recognizable 1st-party Nintendo games? Let's see: -Zelda: Twlight Princess -Metroid Prime 3 -Super Paper Mario -WarioWare -Mario Party 8 -Mario Strikers Charged -Pokemon Battle Revolution -Wii Play
Also lesser knowns such as: -Big Brain Academy -Excite Truck -Battalion Wars 2 -Donkey Kong Barrel Blast
That's not bad for the first year of a system. Just about every major character they have is featured in a game and the next 4 months will bring games like Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros and hopefully Mario Kart.
In comparison, what 1st party games has Sony offered? -Eye of Judgment -Folklore -Formula One Championship -Genji -Heavenly Sword -Lair -Motorstorm -NBA 08 -Ratchet and Clank -Resistence -Singstar -Warhawk
Interestingly, both companies have put out about the same number of 1st party titles. However, I think it's quite obvious that Nintendo's tend to feature more recognizable characters than Sony's. I agree with you that Mario sell on Nintendo systems. But there are already 4 Mario-themed games on the system, so it's hard to argue that there's a lack of recognizable titles.
@feelmyring, Sorry, that last paragraph should read: "Most of the people I talk to have the same complaint about Wii that they do about Playstation 3; that there's not as many immediately recognizable first party games out there."

He's pretty pretty good about accuracy in the past.
