Ubisoft announced today it has reached an agreement with Mr. Tom Clancy to acquire all intellectual property rights to the Tom Clancy name, on a perpetual basis and free of all related future royalty payments, for use in video games and ancillary products including related books, movies and merchandising products.

Steam adding over 40 titles from Ubisoft

Valve announced today that Ubisoft will be using the company's Steam digital distribution service and plans to add over 40 other titles from its repertoire soon. Assassin's Creed can be pre-purchased for $50 before its April 9 launch. In the coming weeks Ubisoft will add many more games from the Tom Clancy and Heroes of Might & Magic series. Valve says that the Ubisoft line-up on Steam will be the largest of any publisher using the service.

Ubisoft has raised guidance for the current financial year from €875 million to €920 million for the full financial year, and announced that Rainbow Six Vegas 2 has sold 2 million units. "As expected, 2008 is off to be a record year for the videogame market and our games have performed remarkably well in this context," said Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot.

Ubisoft has reported Q4 sales of EUR 217 million (USD 340 million; GBP 172 million), up 20.3 per cent from the same period of the prior fiscal year at constant exchange rates. Fourth quarter sales were 31.5 per cent higher than the company's initial guidance issued on January 23, 2008. This strong showing was driven by better-than-expected performances from Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2, the Games for Everyone brands and Assassin's Creed.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said in a conference call Thursday that his company is now ready to "go for" a Tom Clancy-branded MMO. Now that Ubisoft is free of royalty charges to Tom Clancy following the acquisition of all IP rights to the author's name, the French game maker will now pursue a Tom Clancy MMO.

Ubisoft didn’t disclose raw sales figures but did reveal the percentage of the company’s game sales on each platform. Lessons learned: Given that the PlayStation 3 accounted for 20% of the company’s sales last year, it’s clearly a meaningful machine to Ubisoft. But maybe not as much as the Xbox 360 and the DS, which contributed 26% each.

French-headquartered publisher and developer Ubisoft has revealed holiday revenue up 13% year on year, noting that some holiday titles "did not meet the required quality levels", and also revealing a delay to I Am Alive and a new upcoming iteration in the Assassin's Creed franchise. Overall, sales for the quarter ended December 31st were EUR 508 million ($737 million), up 12.9 percent compared to the same period of 2007-08.
