PS3 fanboys don't like to share, it seems. According to EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich, PS3 owners prefer exclusives on their systems. In fact, a title that is exclusive to PS3 will sell 45% better on the system than a multiplatform title. Exclusives on both the Wii and Xbox 360, according to the analyst, only have a "small increase" over multiplatform titles.

The Japanese electronics and entertainment conglomerate said it targets PlayStation 3 videogame console sales of 10 million units this year compared with 9.24 million in the year just ended. Sony, which competes with Microsoft Corp and Nintendo Co Ltd in the global videogame industry, also aims to sell 15 million PlayStation Portable handheld game machines this year, up from 13.9 million units in the 2007/08 business year.

Quietly unveiled at yesterday's PSN session was PhyreEngine, a new "free to use graphics engine" from Sony Computer Entertainment. According to the presentation, the package includes full documentation, "70+ samples" and "full source code and artwork" of sample game templates. Working on both OpenGL and Direct3D, this engine will allow developers to more easily develop for the PS3 by using PC environments they're more familiar with.

From JPY 50 billion to over JPY 100 billion Sony has announced that it expects losses at its videogame unit to double for the year ended March 2008, from JPY 50 billion (303.5 million) to over JPY 100 billion (EUR 609 million).

Sony to Post First Loss in 14 Years

According to Nikkei, Sony's expected to announce an operating loss of US $1.1 billion t(�100 billion) for 2007-2008. The first loss in 14 years and second since Sony was founded in 1958. Loses could even be double the expected number, Nikkei reported. This comes as Sony said it would have to cut 16,000 jobs. Sony had originally forecast a profit of 200 billion yen for 2007-2008.

Hardware: Overall hardware sales increased as a result of an increase in sales of PS3 and PSP. Sales of PlayStation®2 (“PS2”) decreased year-on-year. Software: Despite an increase in PS3 and PSP software sales, overall software sales decreased as a result of a decrease in PS2 software sales. An operating loss of ¥39.5 billion ($379 million) was reported, an improvement of ¥57.2 billion year-on-year.

Europe becomes Sony's biggest market

Sales and operating income for Sony Corporation fell in its home territory of Japan, and also in North America, for the financial year ending March 31, 2008. But that was offset by growth elsewhere, including a rise of 14 per cent in Europe, and 19.3 per cent in other territories - leading to an overall increase 6.9 per cent, and making Europe the company's biggest market in terms of its entire portfolio of products.
