While progress is being made in piracy, broadband penetration and the high definition console market, it's unlikely that Russia is "the right market" for Nintendo's current generation of hardware.

Along with the highly-anticipated Animal Crossing: Let’s Go to the City which was dated earlier today, highlights include Wii Music, Disaster: Day of Crisis and Professor Layton and the Curious Village. "Wii Fit" moved into top spot, bumping "Mario Kart," also for the Wii, into second place, according to the NPD Group which tracks the industry. Electronic Arts' "Madden NFL 09" entered the chart in third (Xbox 36) and fifth (PlayStation 3), with "Wii Play" sandwiched in fourth. The top 20 featured seven games for the Wii and seven for the Nintendo DS. The Xbox 360 had three titles compared to two for the PlayStation 3 and one for the PlayStation 2.

Well, that's awkwardly timed. Just as Sony was wowing the world with its new, super-powered PSP dubbed NGP and its wow-that's-smart plan to bring "PlayStation content" to Android phones, Nintendo was reporting a 46 percent dip in its October to December Q3 profits, thanks to flagging Wii and DS sales. Acknowledging the tough market, the Big N cut its sales forecast for the Wii 1.5 million units, down to 16 million, and for the DS 1 million units, down to 22.5 million.

Nintendo teams with Masahiro Sakurai

Nintendo announced today the formation of Project Sora, a subsidiary that will develop a new title to be directed by Smash Bros. Brawl director Masahiro Sakurai. Located in Tokyo's Idabashi area, the new studio, officially formed on January 22, has capital of 200 million yen, provided 72% by Nintendo, with Sakurai's studio Sora and other parties providing the rest. Sakurai will serve as the company's president. The studio has, or will have, a staff of 30.

Pachter's prediction for Q1 09 FY

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has predicted Nintendo will report sales above Yen 421 billion ($3.91 billion) and raise yearly guidance to near Yen 1,907 billion ($17.7 billion). "Nintendo's recent financial performance has been spectacular and we expect this to continue in FY:09," said Pachter, "Nintendo's Wii and DS appear to be selling even better in FY:09 than in FY:08, and we believe the momentum will last through the end of FY:09."

Nintendo shares fall to seven month low

Nintendo shares sank to a seven month low on the close of the Nikkei, despite the company experiencing runaway success with sales of the Wii and DS consoles. Stock fell 5.9 per cent to JPY 45,800, the lowest since the beginning of July, as the Japanese export market braces itself for a possible recession.
