According to this article, Nintendo filed a patent for "Invitation System for Online Video Games" last year which has just been recently publicly published. Although the specifics of the implementation are not elaborated, it is essentially similar to what Xbox Live can do. Through the system users will be able to send invitations to other offline or online users to play certain games and allow them to join automatically. This bodes well for the future of Wii online gaming, although it is still questionable whether the Wii is able to implement such a system.

For all their millions of fans in the West, quality Nintendo merchandise outside of Japan is pretty thin on the ground. Especially when you compare it to other nerdly pursuits like Star Wars or...Star...Trek. Maybe Nintendo realise this. Maybe that's why they just signed a deal with Corgi International that will see all kinds of neat Nintendo swag flooding the market over the next three years. In a deal that excludes Asia (you get ENOUGH), Corgi will be releasing action figures, "playset environments", plush & vinyl figures, electronic products and "iconic game replicas".

Filing law suits against the big three console manufacturers seem to be the in thing lately, and now Lonestar Inventions wants to join in. According to the article, the Texas-based company alleges that the Wii infringes on a patent they owned that was issued back in 1993 for a "high capacitance structure in a semiconductor device." The company had filed similar suits before with Texas Instruments and Marvell Semiconductors that were eventually settled.
