With software piracy spiraling out of control in countries like China, Korea, and Brazil, Nintendo of America turns to its on last hope to curb the bootleg rampage - the U.S. Government. Specifically the Office of the United States Trade Representative, which has played a key role in the creation of intellectual property laws since the early 80's.

Nintendo: Software Attach Rates Are Increasing?

David Yarnton, the avuncular general manager of Nintendo in the UK, has said that attach rates to his company's gaming hardware are on the up. Responding to criticism that Nintendo platforms have lower attach rates than their rivals, Sony and Microsoft, Yarnton said: "We are still very early into the life-cycle but even so we are seeing the attach rate increasing all the time.

Nintendo Australia has sent out a press release today, confirming that the Nintendo DS has reached more than one million units sold, 153 weeks since launch. The data is provided by independent market research company, Gfk Australia. Nintendo has also confirmed that the Wii has sold over 300,000 units, 58 weeks since launch. This makes both the Nintendo DS and the Wii officially the fastest selling consoles to reach these milestones.

As of 10:33 am (GMT 9) on the Japanese stock market, Nintendo's stock rose 1.8% to 46,250 yen while Sony's stock declined 0.8% to 6,500 yen. Nintendo's total market value is now at 6.55 trillion yen compared to Sony's 6.51 trillion.

Nintendo cut its Wii sales forecast for the first time. It said the stronger yen will also erode earnings. Nintendo today cut its Wii sales forecast for this fiscal year by 1 million consoles to 26.5 million. Sales of the DS handheld player are projected at 31.5 million machines, 1 million more than earlier estimated, the company said.

Nintendo Co. raised its full-year profit forecast by 26 percent because of higher-than-anticipated sales of Wii and DS game players, sending shares of the company to their biggest gain in nine months. Net income will climb 59 percent to 410 billion yen ($3.8 billion) in the year ending March 31, the Kyoto-based company said in a statement today. The guidance exceeded the 382.6 billion yen median of 23 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.
