If there's one tech niche that should be immune to a slowdown, it's videogames. Videogame sales rose 39% in October, according to the NPD Group, after a 64% rise in September. EA has worked hard at playing catch-up in the red-hot Wii market. It's now the No. 2 developer of Wii games, behind only Nintendo. The result: Analysts expect earnings to rise 76% next year

The endeavor is a free web-based portal for creating, sharing and playing free computer games. That sounds dry, but think of it as a YouTube of video games. And if that sounds quite a bit like the Xbox Live Community Games feature announced by Microsoft just yesterday then recognize this key difference: creating games using �The Sims Carnival� requires zero programming skills.

"EA has apparently decided to throw some of its best minds behind a new division called 'EA Blueprint.' The point of the division? To help out smaller developers and get games - both extensions of existing EA franchises as well as new IP - out on various platforms, with a strong emphasis on social networking platforms like Facebook."

Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix has sold (not shipped) 2 million in its first 4 days at retail. Command & Conquer 3 has reached 2 million sales as well. EA announced this news in their Q1 earnings, April-June press release. Other info in the article includes a drop in earnings of 4% & 8 new IPs for 2008.

Publisher plans to boost revenues with new casual games portfolio. Electronic Arts targets $6 billion in revenues by the end of the 2011 fiscal year, according to CEO John Riccitiello. With revenues for this financial year expected to be around $3.5 billion, EA are expecting a growth of 70 per cent in three years. "It's a big number. It's never been done in the game software industry before," said chief executive John Riccitiello to analysts at a meeting at EA's Californian headquarters.

Sony platforms dominated EA fiscal Q4 2008 sales

Electronic Arts has revealed that game sales for Sony platforms far outweighed its rivals across the three months, with the PlayStation 2 leading the way on 166 million units, followed by the PlayStation 3 on 152 million. The Xbox 360 managed 128 million units by comparison, with the Wii a relatively meagre 75 million units.
