Paramount drops Blu-Ray support

Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation announced today that they will exclusively support the HD-DVD format on a worldwide basis. The first title to be released exclusively on HD-DVD will be Blades of Glory, followed by Transformers and Shrek the Third. "We decided to release 'Shrek the Third' and other DreamWorks Animation titles exclusively on HD-DVD because we believe it is the best format to bring high quality home entertainment to a key segment of our audience--families," said CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg.

I'm sure you all remember Immersion, the parasites who sat on patents for rumble technology and then sued any company that dared use them. It led to the famously arrogant "Rumble is a last-gen feature" remark from Sony, before the company went crawling back to Immersion and settled a deal to create the DualShock 3. Rumble returned to the PS3, and it was all water under the bridge ... or was it?

According to Famitsu magazine, the Tokyo Game Show will exhibit over 40 unreleased titles for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable, including a total of 14 previously unannounced projects. Sony will make India its gaming development hub

Atindriya Bose, country manager, (SCE), said the company would boost its gaming production business in India to leverage on the cost benefits that the country offers. The company has decided to transfer technology for its games from its London studio to India and also impart training to local developers till they have mastered the cost-optimisation tricks. Moreover, given the huge costs of production, SCE will also offer game development kits on loan.

At their E3 press conference today, Sony announced a new hardware bundle for their still-running-strong PS2 system. The package will come with a copy of Lego Batman and a DVD of the Justice League animated movie, all for $149.

Kutaragi officially retires from Sony

We've known about it for months but today it becomes official -- Ken Kutaragi, the father of the PlayStation, is stepping down as chairman and chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. He will still have an advisory post at the gaming unit but his days of crazy press statements as one of the public faces of Sony are over.
