In news of "Why didn't someone think of this sooner?" nature, SCEA hardware marketing manager, John Koller, has revealed that Sony is working on hybrid Blu-ray movie releases containing playable PS3 games. In an interview with Video Business, Koller said that the first such BD offerings will hit the market during 2009.

SCEA has announced that it will be shutting down the servers for a number of its older online titles for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable platforms. According to dbTechno the online games will end on June 30 this year, and while most games will still be playable offline, two of the titles which only have online modes will become unplayable. Sony announced this morning that it shipped over 8 million units of the Move controller to retailers worldwide as of April 3. The company also noted that the PlayStation Move "ecosystem," which includes the PS Eye, Move navigation controller and Move-friendly software, "continues to see strong momentum at retail." (The company had shipped 4.1 million Moves by last November.) Sony also mentioned that PS3 sales have reached 50 million units worldwide.

Sony has announced that its president, Ryoji Chubachi, is stepping down, with Howard Stringer to take up the role in addition to being chairman and chief executive. Looks like Sir Howard Stringer is making some progress then.

A robust start to the U.S. holiday shopping season, providing some reassurance about the health of the U.S. economy. Sony was also boosted by a ratings upgrade by Mizuho Securities to "2" from "3." Late last week, Kotaku ran a rumor that said Sony Computer Entertainment Chief Technical Officer Izumi Kawanishi had been shuffled out of SCEI and is now working for Sony Corporate. Kotaku contacted Sony Computer Entertainment, Sony Computer Entertainment of America and Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe. All refused to comment. Odd, because this seems something that could be addressed rather easily if Kawanishi was still at the company.
