Wii Remote Originally For Gamecube

Siliconera - January 8, 2009

Submitted by mrahaju (9) at 9:07PM PST on January 8, 2009

On March 10, 2006 Nintendo filed a patent for an "Accelerometer-based controller” in Japan, which is now registered on the US Patent and Trademark database. It is the Wii remote. On further perusal, the patent figures have some interesting tidbits. One sketch shows Mario playing tennis, which we know from a previous GDC was of the original concepts that became Wii Sports Tennis. Another figure shows the Wii remote linked to a Gamecube console via a Wavebird-like adapter.

H1 08 profit up 34%, trims outlook

Reuters - October 30, 2008

Nintendo posted a 34% gain in operating profit for April-September thanks to brisk demand for its Wii game console, but they cut its annual outlook amid a global economic slowdown and a surge in the yen. Operating profit is 252.2 billion yen, up from 188.78 billion yen YOY. For the year to March 2009 Nintendo lowered its operating profit forecast by 3 % to 630 billion yen. The latest outlook is still up from 487.22 billion yen a year earlier.

NOE marketing director: Wii storage for 'geeks and...

Joystiq.com - June 11, 2008

Submitted by vGInfidel (150) at 5:33PM PST on June 11, 2008

As Nintendo's WiiWare service grows, avid Wii users are finding themselves burning through the console's paltry 512MB of internal memory quite quickly. So we found it slightly strange when speaking to Edge Magazine, NOE Marketing Director Laurent Fischer was surprisingly dismissive of the growing space demands of WiiWare titles. According to him, only "geeks and otaku" want the issue actually addressed. Which does not bode well for those "geeks" hoping for extra storage.

WiiWare gets Euro date, pricing

Eurogamer - April 24, 2008

Submitted by deftangel (291) at 3:58AM PST on April 24, 2008

Nintendo's WiiWare service will launch in Europe on 20th May and games will cost 500 Wii Points and upwards, according to a release issued today. Nintendo has yet to announce a European launch line-up for the service, which will offer first- and third-party downloadable games, but we can assume it will be drawn from the games shown off in the US recently. WiiWare has already launched in Japan on 25th March and will go live in the US on 12th May.
