In January 2003, when we last spoke to Nintendo's secret weapon, lead designer Shigeru Miyamoto, we urged him to start making games with a "grown-up aesthetic" — you know, something like Grand Theft Auto. Thankfully, he ignored us. With more than 20 million Wii consoles sold, Nintendo is now winning the videogame wars. This time, we asked Miyamoto what he thinks.

Nintendo sued Nyko over Nunchuk

Nintendo Co., maker of the Wii video-game system, sued accessory seller Nyko Technologies Inc. over what it says is a knock-off of the Nunchuk remote controller used with the popular system. The Nyko product ``wholly appropriates the novel shape, design, overall appearance and even the color and materials used in the Nintendo Nunchuk controller,'' Nintendo said in the federal court complaint, filed June 10 in Seattle.

NPD reports Nintendo's Wii tops Canadian sales charts

Nintendo's Wii(TM) console has reached another milestone by becoming the top selling next generation home console video game system in Canada. According to the latest data from independent market research firm The NPD Group, Inc, total life to date sales of the Wii console in Canada have now surpassed the previous home console system leader with lifetime sales of 813,000 units. The Wii console launched in November 2006.

The latest video game industry sales figures reported by the independent NPD Group show that Nintendo DS™ and Wii™ topped the U.S. charts for February. DS sold nearly 587K units and Wii sold nearly 43K. “Our momentum has not let up since the holidays and we expect it to continue throughout the year,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “We have the industry’s strongest lineup of games for everyone from core to casual gamers.”

Nintendo Overtakes Sony as World's Biggest Software...

Oct. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Nintendo Co. overtook Sony Corp. as the world's biggest maker of game software in the third quarter, helped by new titles for the Wii console and DS handheld player, researcher ISuppli Corp. said. Nintendo now expects to sell 17.5 million Wiis in the year ending March 31, a 6.1 percent increase from a July forecast, and 97 million game titles, up 35 percent from its previous estimate.

George Harrison, on GameBoy: "This year in our marketing you really won't see much push against Game Boy itself, so it will kind of seek its own level. It's hard to say in the future if we will ever bring back the Game Boy trademark." On WiiWare: "It really depends on the developers. If they have their games ready and they're of an appropriate quality, then there's nothing to stop them from launching before the end of the year."

Nintendo Fiscal Year 2009 Results

For the financial year ending March 31, 2009, the company posted record highs for both sales and operating profit. The Kyoto-based game company reported sales of 1.83 trillion yen, which is up 9 percent from the previous year, and it reported operating profits of over 555 billion yen, which is up 14 percent from 2008.

Nintendo Q3: Forecasts down on ¥48 billion net loss

Nintendo’s has lowered its forecasts for FY2012 after reporting a net loss of ¥48.3 billion loss for the nine month period ending December 2011, compared to a profit of ¥49.5 billion in the previous corresponding period. Nintendo’s net sales were at ¥556.1 billion for the period, down from ¥807.9 billion in the same nine months in 2011. It now expects a full-year loss of ¥65 billion. Sales for the year are now predicted to be at ¥660 billion, down from a previously expected ¥790 billion.
