NPD releases "Online Gaming 2008" report

According to The NPD Group’s recently released report, "Online Gaming 2008,” which analyzes the online gaming landscape and focuses specifically on consumers’ behavior, time and money spent in this market, overall participation in gaming rose in 2007 over 2006, from 64 percent of the population to 72 percent of the population. Of these, more than half say they play games online.

Acer not making console

Acer has just confirmed to videogaming247 that a story that broke earlier this week - claiming that Taiwanese laptop manufacturer Acer was planning to release an open-license games console - is based on misinterpreted quotes and is incorrect.

Acer plans to join the console market

The taiwanese Notebook manufacturer Acer plans to enter into the console market. This communicated the senior Vice President, James T. Wong, on a press conference. Most current consoles are closed and proprietaere systems, which machine" on PC technology based "game machine"; from Acer is to set against it on open standards. This could mean that game developers would not have to pay license fees for the publication of plays on this system.

SONY's interpretation of NPD Feb 08

The PlayStation brand generated the most U.S. retail dollars in the industry for the second consecutive month with $511 million in sales, 52% and 6% higher than Microsoft and Nintendo, respectively. # PlayStation total hardware revenue was $204 million in February, 125% and 11% higher than Microsoft and Nintendo, respectively. # PlayStation total software revenue in February was $247 million, 32% and 5% higher than Microsoft and Nintendo respectively.

Capcom working on 15 different projects

Capcom has said it is working on 15 different projects and aims to grow "dramatically" in the "coming few years". Its US blog mouthed off in an effort to coax more staff on board, claiming a different vision to other publishers, better focus on quality, and a more productive working relationship with its developers.

SCi to cut 25 per cent of jobs, cancels 14 projects

SCi, parent company of Tomb Raider publisher Eidos, has said that is plans to cut jobs as part of a radical restructuring plan. The company plans to operate at a maximum head count of 800, a reduction of 25 per cent, while the board has decided to cancel 14 projects currently under way as they will not generate an acceptable return on investment or are not of sufficient quality.

Weekly UK Sales: Burnout Doesn't Fade Away

EA’s ‘Burnout Paradise’ is the first title of 2008 to hold on to the No1 spot in the All Formats Chart, despite a 13% drop in sales in its second week of release. The PS3 version accounts for 49% of sales this week, almost overtaking the Xbox 360 version whose sales fall by 16% compared to PS3’s 9% decline.

SCi facing investor assault; management asked to resign

SCi Entertainment, parent company of Eidos, is under assault as investors demand the resignation of top executives. The Times reports things crumbled like a booby-trapped tomb after the company's stock plummeted last week following the announcement that management was pulling out of buyout talks; making matters worse was the discovery that SCi borrowed £30 million ($59 million) just to stay afloat until the end of the year.
