Next-gen.biz March NPD Review and Analysis

next-gen.biz - April 22, 2008

Submitted by Mushashi (5) at 1:30AM PST on April 22, 2008

In this month's column, we'll break down the figures and answer the following questions: How much have game prices risen in the past two years? How much did those price increases contribute to the nearly $1 billion in software sales in March 2008? Sony has sold over 800,000 PS3 systems in the U.S. this year. How long did it take Sony to sell that many in 2007? And how soon could the American Wii installed base catch up with the Xbox 360?

"I'd struggle to make a game for less than $50...

gamesindustry - April 21, 2008

Submitted by Mushashi (5) at 3:55AM PST on April 21, 2008

David Jones, creator of iconic titles like Lemmings, GTA and Crackdown, has told GI.biz that the cost of creating high quality original games with strong, new IP has skyrocketed to the point where he'd find it hard to spend less than $50 mln on a title. "Unfortunately these days it does take that amount. Crackdown wasn't that long ago and our development budget was something like $50 mln, and even that to me now, I don't know if I could do anything for much less than that."

Pricecut Fails to Put 360 Over PS3 in UK, Wii #1

reghardware - April 18, 2008

Submitted by Animate (241) at 10:52PM PST on April 18, 2008

MS claimed to have more than doubled 360’s EU sales due to recent price cut, but it failed to surpass PS3. UK console sales monitor Chart Track confirmed that the past 15 weeks the PS3 has largely kept ahead of the Xbox 360. However, a spokesman admitted that the two machines' units have been "extremely close" in some weeks. The Wii would still be ahead of PS3 and Xbox 360 if those two machines' UK sales were combined.

I wanted to inform everyone who was not in the edit meeting that Shoe will be leaving us as April 25th. Sam Kennedy will become Editorial and Site Director moving forward. Though the timing is less than ideal, following the closure of GFW, the fact is that like Mark Macdonald before him, Shoe feels it's time to take a break from work and that after almost 12 years at Ziff (with a year off on Gamers.com) it's time for change in his life.
