Paramount may now leave HD-DVD for Bluray

Kotaku - January 8, 2008

Submitted by Animate (241) at 9:53PM PST on January 7, 2008

"The Financial Times are reporting that part of Paramount Studio's deal with the HD-DVD camp included a get-out clause. Said clause would be triggered when and if Warner turned coat and signed with Blu-Ray. Oops. Paramount are now "poised" to do just that, leaving the vast majority of studios aligned with team Blu-Ray and HD-DVD dead in the water."

Analyst: Hardware Supply Constraints To Hit Holidays?

Gamasutra - October 31, 2007

Submitted by Just_Ben (112) at 11:22AM PST on October 31, 2007

Analyst Colin Sebastian is stating that hardware supply constraints and lower pricing for PS2 and Wii software may pose health risks for the industry's sales numbers. "Holiday hardware demand may outstrip supplies," Sebastian said. "We believe one of the themes from the holiday period could be hardware supply constraints, driven strong demand for Nintendo’s Wii and a shift in Xbox 360 unit sales from 4Q into the September quarter, while Sony’s PS3 and PSP may benefit from lower price points."

WalMart Canada to cut video game prices

Globe and Mail - October 19, 2007

Submitted by Laoldar (182) at 12:37PM PST on October 20, 2007

I think this could lead to a nice spike in Canadian video game sales. Due to our rising dollar, consumers are increasingly demanding parity with US prices. Video game prices tend to be about 10% (or up to $10) higher than US game prices, and older releases cost even more. For example, an older DS title can still cost up to $45 new, while brand new titles are as low as $30...a relfectiion that newer titles were shipped at a different exchange rate.

Gamasutra - August 27, 2007

Submitted by Animate (241) at 10:31PM PST on August 27, 2007

Tons of graphs and text explaining the significance of the data. 1st) A comparison of NCAA Football on consoles. 2nd) Guitar Hero II shows the purchase of RedOctane has already paid for itself. 3rd) Weekly Sales for Wii, PS3, 360 in graph for all of 2007. 4th) Installed base curves for consoles. 5th) PSP vs DS weekly 2007. 6th) Nearly UNPRECEDENTED Videogame Industry Growth this year GRAPHS! it seems likely that revenues may go above $18 billion. In this optimistic scenario, industry revenues during the single month of December 2007 would equal or surpass the total annual revenue from all of 1997.

Japanese Game Industry on Track for Record Year

GameDaily BIZ - July 5, 2007

Submitted by Butterball (1049) at 9:22AM PST on July 5, 2007

Thanks in large part to Nintendo's platforms, the Japanese video game industry has seen nearly 26 percent growth during the first half of 2007. The sales pace of software and hardware has picked up since 2006, and Famitsu expects great results for the second half as well. Although the Japanese video game industry had been in decline in recent years, the state of gaming across the Pacific has definitely seen an upswing. Last year set a new record for the industry with over 600 billion in sales. According to the first-half report sent to GameDaily BIZ by the Famitsu Marketing Data Service, 2007 is shaping up to be even better.

NPD: Wii Surpasses Xbox 360 As New Console Leader In U.S.

Kotaku - July 17, 2008

Submitted by apujanata (14935) at 2:57PM PST on July 17, 2008

Nintendo just broke word that the Wii has overtaken the Xbox 360 as the best selling current-generation console in the United States, with a 10.9 million strong install base, according to the NPD Group. That means Nintendo sold at least 700,000 Wiis in the country in June. We're waiting on final NPD numbers for all console manufacturers, expected later in the day. As of last month, the previous hardware champ, the Xbox 360, stood strong at 10.2 million units sold.
