ESA: 38% of gamer are female

38 percent of gamers are female, spending an average of 7.4 hours a week playing, according to the Entertainment Software Association.;;; Studies and sales data have shown that women are more likely to play hand-held casual games, such as the Nintendo DS, along with social oriented games such as "The Sims," where women make up more than 55 percent of players.

ADV Films has chosen the Blu-ray high definition format and plans to begin releasing high def versions of some titles as early as this spring. A highly placed source at the company told us that "frontlist is more important than catalogue right now," so the first high def releases will be the company's newest titles.

This week's top rental charts from U.S. game rental company GameFly: Halo 3 is now a distant memory, off of the charts completely, as The Orange Box slips into third place after two weeks at number one. In its place is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which traveled around the top five for weeks before taking the top spot.

According to the NPD results, only 40% of PlayStation 3 owners polled were aware the machine had a Blu-ray player and 30% of Xbox 360 owners were aware of the HD graphics capabilities of the machine.
