Pachter: Console Price Drops This Holiday

Analyst Michael Pachter expects a $50 price drop will be hitting both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 this holiday, but that it will still be hard for the industry to match last year's extraordinary holiday sales.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp's (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld game gear outsold Nintendo Co Ltd's (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) DS portable player more than 2-to-1 in Japan in April, game magazine publisher Enterbrain said.

Do demos HURT game sales? Study says yes

Demos may be the best way to find out if you like a game, but releasing one might not be in a publisher’s best financial interest, according to a study discussed at last week’s MI6 video game marketing conference. This is the same study, presented by Gregory Short and Geoffery Zatkin, heads of the Electronic Entertainment Design and Research Group (EEDAR), which recommended marketing teams should work with developers to come up with an Xbox 360 game’s Achievements.

Speaking to videogaming247, Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter has predicted year-end console sales figures that will serve as a sobering reminder to Microsoft that Xbox 360 sales appear to be slowing. “We expect Sony to have an installed base of 16.3 million PS3s by year end, and Microsoft to have an installed base of 21.3 million Xbox 360s (both figures are U.S. and Europe only, not counting Japan),” he said.

[As previously posted] The Capcom take is that, as the industry has grown, the amount of time a title is viable for sale has lessened. EA disagrees. Jeff Karp, EA’s head of North American publishing, told MTV Multiplayer that the life cycle is increasing in most respects.
