Nintendo Wii outsells PS3 4-to-1 in Japan in February

Nintendo Co Ltd's Wii game console outsold Sony Corp's PlayStation 3 nearly 4-to-1 in Japan in February as Wii software titles dominated the best seller list, a game magazine publisher said. Nintendo sold 331,627 units of the Wii in the four weeks to Feb. 24, compared with 89,131 units of the PS3, Enterbrain said on Thursday.

Analysts suggest Nintendo & MS made decisions that would lead to shortages. "Wii shortages were compounded by diversion of supply to JA to support Wii Fit and SSBB." Evan Wilson: MS said supply constraints dampened sales, consistent with us. "However, we don't believe underestimation of demand led to big constraints given recent sales volume. More likely due to comp. restrictions or intentional drying of channel before a new-product launch.""

You Spent $9.5 Billion on Games in 2007

"Consumers spent nearly ten billion dollars on videogame software last year, according to data from the NPD Group and the Entertainment Software Association. The bulk of that was on console games, which saw $6.6 billion in sales. Handheld software saw $2 billion, while PC games trailed with $0.9 billion. (Data table included with article.)"

Xbox 360 Drives the Video Game Console Industry in 2007: NPD data released today confirms consumers spent more dollars on Xbox 360 in 2007, with more than $13.7 billion in total consumer spending. Xbox 360 won 2007 with $4.8 billion in total consumer spend compared to Wii with $3.5 billion and PlayStation 3 with $2.2 billion. This wraps up a historic year, with NPD reporting consumers have spent nearly 45 percent of total industry figures on Xbox 360.
