NPD no longer to publish unit sales

Joystiq.com - October 12, 2010

Submitted by Jonman (379) at 11:39AM PST on October 12, 2010

NPD's monthly public report on video game software and hardware sales in the US will change this month. The most noticeable alteration will be the removal of hardware and software unit sales. The company will still provide a monthly list of the top ten selling "physical purchases" (i.e. brick-and-mortar retail) on consoles, but by title and not by individual platform SKUs -- meaning multi-platorm games will be clumped in one sum.

Industry Rumblings: RE5 May Go Timed Exclusive for Xbox 360

PlayStationLife - June 18, 2008

Submitted by Jlmadyson (1497) at 11:46AM PST on June 18, 2008

From what I have been told, Microsoft is looking to pay Capcom an undisclosed amount, for timed exclusivity of Resident Evil 5. It is still not known if Capcom has accepted the offer… The information we got, was only that Microsoft has made the offer. If this is going to be announced it will be @ E3. Similar to the GTAIV “showing of the tattoo” a couple of years ago. It this is true, all of you petition fanatics out there better get to work.

Tecmo has issued a pair of press releases discounting certain "foreign media" reports, which allege that dozens of Team Ninja developers are leaving in the wake of Itagaki's resignation and that a lawsuit has been filed against the company on behalf of all employees. Tecmo called the rumors of a mass exodus "groundless" and claimed details about the lawsuit are "inaccurate." Tecmo pleaded with the media to be "fair" about the developing reports, as its employees have grown noticeably anxious.

"So, after some careful consideration, we decided to continue our support for the PC Crysis franchise with this release. But yes, all new franchises we develop in the future will be created with a cross platform strategy in mind. Yes, we have made further enhancements to make our CryENGINE 2 even more scaleable, which is a side benefit of having to add features that make it more console friendly, and the luxury of still more time to polish and tune it."

Online subscriptions exceed $1 billion a year, says NPD

GI.biz - May 8, 2008

Submitted by Rol83 (481) at 2:49PM PST on May 8, 2008

The NPD Group has released data indicating that the value of US online game subscriptions exceeds USD 1 billion annually... The NPD also said that 11 million people subscribe to online games each month... Other analysts and execs have previously suggested that data showing a decline in PC sales does not reflect a true picture of the business because it does not account for digital distribution and online subscription sales.
