Xbox 360 DivX/XviD Playback Tested

The Xbox 360 supports DivX and XviD as of today, which may make some of you with big file collections (like us) as giddy as a kid in store with puppies made of candy. We threw our entire collection of movies, TV shows and random clips at it and found that the 360 can play back pretty much anything. Here are some notes.

Apparently Toshiba and Microsoft are working on a revised Xbox 360 with a HD DVD drive at its core and an improved media center. Also it states that both Toshiba and Microsoft are not happy with the sales of the 360 HD DVD addon.

Only Famitsu and Media Create numbers will be used, and every title will receive the benefit of the doubt. In other words, the sales total for a title will be whichever firm tracks it higher.

Microsoft's growing troubles with the Xbox 360 video game console appear to be catching up to the company. Sales of the gaming machine plunged 60% in the fiscal fourth quarter, Microsoft disclosed yesterday. In its earnings statement for the quarter, Microsoft said it shipped 700,000 Xbox 360 units during the period, compared to 1.8 million in the fiscal fourth quarter of 2006 -- a fall off of 61%.

Microsoft announced today that European sales for the X360 have more than doubled due to the recent pricedrop, “significantly broadening the console's audience” it says. Microsoft said that “the X360 is the number one next-gen console in EMEA, owning 42% of the marketin terms of life to date revenue. X360 continues to enjoy the highest software attach rate of any game console in EU with more than 7.0 games sold per console (PS3: 3.8;Wii 3.5) after 27 months on the market.”

As part of an in-depth Gamasutra interview published today, outspoken N+ creators Raigan Burns and Mare Sheppard have questioned the state of Xbox Live Arcade, suggesting quality issues and publisher-guided games are overwhelming its innovation. The duo, which worked with Slick Entertainment's Nick Waanders to publish ninja action game N+ for XBLA release last month, had sharp words for the games released on the Xbox 360 digital download service

Another Manufacturer Says Xbox 360 Blu-ray Coming

A report from Taiwanese news source Economic Daily News says that Pegatron Technology has received an order from Microsoft to manufacture a Blu-ray equipped model of the Xbox 360. According to the report, Pegatron says that it plans to begin production on the HD version of the Xbox 360 soon, with plans to ship within the next six months, aiming for a pre-holiday release.

Microsoft is celebrating a gigantic spike in Xbox 360 sales. According to ChartTrack data, the platform holder enjoyed a 260% rise in sales of its next-gen format 2 weeks ago (week 34) after introducing the Elite model to the market and dropping the price of its Core and Premium consoles. Perhaps even more impressively, sales only dipped 20% the following week - leaving up-to-date calendar year sales 4.9% higher than in 2006.
