Pachter: Weak dollar to blame for Wii shortage

VideoGaming247 - March 29, 2008

Submitted by deftangel (291) at 9:22AM PST on March 29, 2008

Pachter reckons Nintendo’s been keeping US shipments down to take advantage of stronger currencies in Europe by diverting stock to the Continent and expects American hardware levels to return to normal later this year, now that demand for Nintendo’s machine is levelling off in Europe. His assessment may also explain why all of a sudden Europe’s getting certain Nintendo games before the US. Both Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii are releasing in Europe first.

Investors have also been concerned about the impact of a weaker dollar versus the yen, which erodes the profits of exporters like Nintendo when repatriated into the Japanese currency. The dollar traded on Monday around 106.56 yen, after touching a low of 104.95 yen last week -- the weakest since May 2005.

2 More Consoles May Appear On VC Soon

Kotaku - December 18, 2007

Submitted by Animate (241) at 8:07PM PST on December 18, 2007

"Nintendo have updated their Japanese Virtual Console page, and in doing so have left an alluring little tease. They're displaying 8 console boxes when there's only 6 consoles on the VC, with the remaining 2 boxes greyed out. Expect 2 more consoles to be announced, & announced soon, with one (hopefully/probably) being the Master System, and the other, a complete mystery." I think the other could very likely be Dreamcast, considering Sega's recent actions.

With 2.5 million Wiis sold in the U.S. so far Nintendo of America is very confident, and for good reason. At the current sales pace, they fully expect the Wii to take over the #1 position within the year.

New Wii Games Find a Big (but Stingy) Audience

NY Times - April 21, 2008

Submitted by Rol83 (481) at 11:34PM PST on April 20, 2008

Younger children, women and older consumers, who historically have not been sought by the video-game industry, have discovered video games through the Wii — just not that many of them.bThese new gamers are content with the games they have, often going no further than the Wii Sports game that comes with the machine... The average Wii owner buys only 3.7 games a year, compared with 4.7 for Xbox 360 owners and 4.6 for PlayStation 3 owners, said a Wedbush Morgan analyst, Michael Pachter.
