Halo Wars has been hovering just under the radar for a while now, failing to even make an appearance at Microsoft's big Spring Showcase earlier in the year that showed off all the platform holder's games for the big 2008 Christmas season.

See the Haloverse in high detail with this megaton overload of 40 screens! The Covenant and UNSC aren't holding anything back in Halo Wars... I didn't want to flood the image section. Enjoy.

It's about managing a battle rather than watching it. Need more troops? You have to keep yourself in the game long enough for the supply run to arrive, rather than watching as new Warthogs pop out of your base. You have to actively manage the combat, rather than just pointing troops in the right direction and hoping the numbers game will turn in your favour. It's the same principle that Halo employs. Instead of stashing health packs, you have to decide when to fire and when to hide under cover.

IGN previews the Halo RTS Halo Wars, which is expected to be released in 2008. Halo Wars is set 20 years before the first Halo game. Ensemble Studios, the deleoper of Halo Wars, spent six months to make the RTS controls console-friendly. While there are no Spartan squads in the demo, they are expected to appear in the final game.

Another romp in the Halo universe... The last time gamers got to have a fresh frolic in the Halo universe may have been well over a year ago, but there’s still some more series titles on the gaming horizon...

Bungie encouraged by Halo Wars

Bungie seems excited about the Ensemble-developed Halo Wars. The game is planted firmly in the RTS genre, so, for example, it's not necessary to have players moved in and out of cover. Gushes Bungie AI maven Damian Isla:

Halo Wars is to the Real Time Strategy genre what Honey Nut is to the original Cheerios cereal; dust off that sugary, accessible coating from the game’s exterior and you will no doubt find a bunch of scenarios focusing on resource management and troop deployment.
