CVG Preview "Iizuka guarantees that, "not only will the player be able to play with just the remote, but we are designing the game around the nunchuk so that in this you will be able to play it in two ways - traditionally like the original, or innovative with just the remote."

Sega announced today that their upcoming cult-revival NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams will feature a two-player mode and online support. Though neither has been outlined in detail yet, the combination of announcements would seem to indicate that the two-player mode will be online.

NiGHTS using Wii Weather Channel

Kotaku - November 5, 2007

Submitted by Just_Ben (112) at 8:35AM PST on November 5, 2007

Today, SEGA announced that upcoming Wii title NiGHTS: Journey into Dreams will take advantage of the console's Weather Channel. Not part of the singular player game, NiGHTS features a section called "My Dream" that features artificial life called A-LIFE. It's part of the dream world, and it seems to be an area where players can chill and enjoy mini-games. With not so hot graphics.

Preview: "[developer]wants to move away from using the analog stick controls of the original game to using the Wii Remote in conjunction with your arm...unique bosses for each level, where victory requires you to interact with them and the background, rather than just indiscriminately destroying things...third-person chase cam seems to be the dominant view of the game, but there look to be some side-view shots similar to the original game "

1UP.com's Review of Nights: JoD

Shane Bettenhausen weighs in: "For serious Nights fans, Journey offers a bittersweet reunion that reminds us of what was so singularly special about Sega's airborne dreamweaver. Unfortunately, attempting to evolve the formula creates a host of new problems and issues that ultimately diminish the game's overall appeal. That said, this still represents one of the finest original third-party games available for Wii, and younger players will find a lot to love in this gameplay-rich adventure."

NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams Review

IGN - December 18, 2007

"Personally, we'd rather have seen this one stay a nostalgic piece of gaming history, as Journey of Dreams isn't exactly the spectacular homecoming we were hoping for as huge fans of the original Saturn classic. [Nights] ends up appealing only to the most die-hard (and extremely forgiving) of its original fan base."

From what we've seen thus far, the standard flight levels are on their way to matching the original game's quality (with floatier controls that we have our doubts about), but we're less confident in the newer elements -- running around collecting balls as Helen doesn't seem to be as fun as performing aerial tricks as NiGHTS. And some of the side features don't seem fully fleshed out -- My Dream doesn't look nearly as visually appealing as the standard game, for instance.

NiGHTS looking promising

Based on what we've seen, we're holding out hope that Sega is able to tighten up the whole Nights package. The pieces are all basically there, the gameplay is pretty solid, the visuals are good but could still use some polish, and the ton of extras being crammed into the game for variety is a nice touch. As it stands now, some tightening and polish is needed to bring it closer to matching its predecessor. Fans of the series will want to keep an eye out for the game when it ships this December.
