BBFC rejects cutted Manhunt 2

GI - October 8, 2007

Submitted by Just_Ben (112) at 4:18AM PST on October 8, 2007

The BBFC has again rejected Rockstar's Manhunt 2 despite the developer making cuts to the game after it was initially banned back in June. "We recognise that the distributor has made changes to the game, but we do not consider that these go far enough to address our concerns about the original version"

Sony, Nintendo forbid AO-rated Manhunt 2

Gamespot - June 20, 2007

Submitted by Laoldar (182) at 3:17PM PST on June 20, 2007

"GameSpot has confirmed with Nintendo and Sony that one of those options--accept the ESRB's judgment and release the game with the AO rating--isn't an option at all. Both companies forbid licensed third-party publishers from releasing games rated AO for Adults Only on their various hardware platforms. Though Manhunt 2 isn't slated for any of Microsoft's systems, that company has also confirmed that it does not allow AO-rated titles on the Xbox or Xbox 360. " Not surprising, given what happened with San Andreas once it was re-rated (was pulled and re-released).

Manhunt 2 granted UK release

MCVUK - March 14, 2008

Submitted by Mushashi (5) at 6:19AM PST on March 14, 2008

Rockstar’s Manhunt 2 has finally been granted a UK release after a lengthy legal battle with the BBFC. The Video Appeals Committee today announced that it had upheld the High Court decision to challenge the BBFC’s refusal to give the game UK classification. The VAC has reconsidered the appeal in the light of the High Court’s verdict and decided, again by a majority of four to three, to allow the appeal on the basis that Manhunt 2 should be given an ‘18’ certificate.

BBFC Manhunt 2 Judicial Review Is Go

Kotaku.com - December 21, 2007

Submitted by feelmyring (351) at 8:27AM PST on December 21, 2007

"And the Manhunt 2 UK ban saga continues, as the British Board of Film Certification today announces that they have be granted permission for a judicial review of the appeal the Video Appeals Committee passed regarding the classification of the game. While I think we can all agree that no one cares about Manhunt 2 anymore, the unfolding drama could very well have an important effect on future, more interesting violent video games."

Rockstar wins Manhunt 2 appeal in UK

Gamesindustry - December 10, 2007

Submitted by welshbloke (60) at 11:21AM PST on December 10, 2007

Publisher "pleased" with result, but BBFC won't rate game until full report issued. The Video Appeals Committee decided by four votes to three in favour of Rockstar. The BBFC is currently considering its options, which include either granting the game an 18 rating, or further pursuing a ban by taking the game to the High Court.

Manhunt 2 recieves AO Rating from ESRB

Game Politics - June 19, 2007

Submitted by Jess__ (605) at 2:48PM PST on June 19, 2007

"For a video game publisher, the economic impact of an AO[Adult Only] rating cannot be overstated. It means that major retailers like Wal-mart, which by itself accounts for about 25% of retail games sales, will not carry Manhunt 2. There is an appeal process available to game pubilshers who wish to dispute rating assignments."

1Up Review: 4.0/10.0 Bad!

1Up - October 29, 2007

Submitted by rikitikitik (288) at 11:15PM PST on October 29, 2007

The reviewer laments about the worse-looking graphics compared to the previous iteration, generic characters and locations, unskippable cut-scenes, and a control system that doesn't advance the series at all. "Really, the game warrants a 4 because it's technically playable and, despite its best efforts, probably won't plunge the industry into a period of navel-gazing and political sanction. Everything else about it is largely forgettable."
