Naughty Dog's first PS3 title, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, could turn out to not only be the best PS3 title of the season, but the best all year. Its mix of action and adventure looks like it was ripped straight out of an Indiana Jones film, and the game looks tighter and tighter every time we see it.

Drake's Fortune also takes advantage of the SIXAXIS(TM) wireless controller. Players can utilize the technology to balance across logs or trees in tight, narrow, unstable surfaces and use it to arc and change trajectory of grenades in real-time. Characters express lifelike emotion using gesture and facial expression through the proprietary Wrinkle Mapping Facial Animation system.

"Near the Drake demo booth, the friendly people from Naughty Dog let us know a couple of things: - The engine was built from the ground up - There is meticulous detail and focus on the life-like motion and facial expressions. - The gameplay focuses on things like exploration, cave exploring, hand combat, with a flawless jungle environment influenced on Tomb Raider, with an inflection on foliage detail and everything in general."

"Uncharted has guns. And guns shoot people. Shooting people causes people to bleed. Not in Japan, apparently! When played on a Japanese PS3, Uncharted is bloodless. Sure, Japan has done this before with games like Dead Rising and Resistance. It doesn't matter where you bought Uncharted as the game's still bloodless. The origin of the disc does not matter, but rather, the hardware does."

Q: What feedback have you taken from the E3 build? Elena Fischer: It's far more valuable to get critical feedback than to hear any praise, in many ways. That's why we have a lot of focus testing in-house and out of house. We read everything when we have a public demo of the game. Obviously, we've adjusted the aiming settings quite a bit, and aiming assistance. We've changed the enemy AI and how they interact with the aiming, so they're not fighting the player's controls. We added variety to the enemy behavior, and some dynamic difficulty adjustment. We added some new weapons, like the sniper rifle. I think the main things we got out of the feedback was with the gunplay and the aiming.

The breadth of Uncharted's entertaining acrobatics/gunfight gameplay mix more than makes up for its shortcomings, as does the safe but satisfying story (even if it does get a little ridiculous by the end). It's definitely the type of game that makes you glad you have a PS3.
